Four
Teens Facing Arson & Theft Charges in Conjunction With Urbana
Garage Fires
Four teens
from Urbana have been arrested "in connection" with garage fires
that happened on Monday, according to Frederick County Sheriff's
Office authorities. The 16-year-olds were arrested on Tuesday
after investigators determined that the garage fires on
Singleton Terrace and Addison Woods Road were the result of
arson. The sheriff's office also says that marine flares were
used to light the fires, and that partial flares and safety caps
to the flares were found near the scenes.
According to the sheriff's office, the suspects were identified
from surveillance footage at the Walmart on Guilford Drive and
assistance from the public. Investigators say that flares were
shoplifted from the Walmart a few hours before the fires.
The suspects, who will not be identified because of their ages,
face the following charges:
* second degree arson
* conspiracy to commit arson
* theft
The teens are in the custody of their parents.
Authorities continue to investigate the two arsons plus another
arson involving a flare on McPherson Street from last Friday.
Investigators are collecting evidence from the suspect vehicle
but believe that the arsons were random.
Breaking News - Arsonists Caught?
Cpl. West of the Frederick Police Department has informed a VOU
resident that four individuals have been arrested and charged
with arson and other acts of vandalism for the events of Tuesday
night. The police are certain these are the individuals
responsible. All four are juveniles, three of whom are VOU

Suspicious Garage Fires Hit Homes on Singleton and Addison Woods
Moments Apart - Vandalism Linked?
Frederick
County fire officials are trying to determine whether two fires
that heavily damaged nearby garages in Urbana are linked.
Officials say the first fire was reported at about 10:45 p.m.
Monday in the 3700 block of Singleton Terrace. About five
minutes later, another fire was discovered a couple of blocks
away in the 3900 block of Addison Woods Road. Officials say both
fires were contained by about 11:30 p.m. Also
related, a home on Kinnerton Place had their backyard hit by a
flare (homeowner found the case and gave it to the authorities).
The flare hit a bush and set it on fire. The Gazette is
reporting a task force has been put together to investigate the
vandalism and the fires as related. The fire damage done is
estimated to be $50,000 at one garage and $80,000 at the other.
Two cars were also damaged.

After
35 years in business, the owners of the Cracked Claw at Peter
Pan in Urbana plan on closing permanently. Maryland's
first independently owned Off Track Betting parlor has been
facing increased competition from West Virginia along with a
sour economy - leading the owners to sign a contract to sell the
property.

Townhouse Fire Displaces Four Families - Causes More Than 1.5
Million In Damage
A town house
fire in Urbana has displaced at least four families and killed
several pets. Frederick County Chief Fire Marshal Marc McNeal
says officials received a call about a fire on the deck of a
town house on Winthrop Lane about 10 p.m. Sunday. A neighbor
tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, but the blaze
spread quickly to adjoining town houses. At least four families
were displaced by the fire, and firefighters say several animals
died. The fire was brought under control just before midnight.
Investigators
says a charcoal grill ignited the wooden deck of an Urbana town
house, starting a fire that displaced five families and killed
two cats and a dog. Frederick County Chief Fire Marshal Marc
McNeal said Monday that a firefighter was treated for
heat-related illness while battling the blaze, which caused more
than $1.5 million worth of damage Sunday night. He says it's not
clear whether the grill somehow overturned onto the wooden deck
or if it was simply too close to the railing.
McNeal says a total of 18 people are displaced. He says three
town homes are a total loss, a fourth sustained moderate
exterior damage and a fifth lost power.

Carnival Runs July 19 thru July 24 - No Fireworks
The
Urbana Volunteer Fire Department 2010 Carnival begins Monday,
July 19th and runs through Saturday, July 24th. The Classic Car
Show will be held Sunday July 18th from 12:00 - 4:00. Admission
is FREE for both events. In addtion to nightly buffet dinners
during Carnival, inside the air conditioned fire hall. The
Midway opens at 6:00 nightly and Pay One Price and Ride All
Night is Monday and Wednesday. Due to budget issues, the
traditional annual fireworks display has been cancelled.
Disappointed
patrons were turned away - left only to read a note on the door
of the establishment that stated they were forced to close New
York J&P
Pizza due to increased rent and failed negotiations. Supposedly, J&P
plan to open a new Urbana location in the next year. This
is a huge blow to the shopping center which has struggled to
find tenants. In tight economic times, it's hard to
believe Kimco (the leasing agent) would be increasing rents,
given the high rates that the tenants that occupy there are
already reportedly paying.
The community
reaction has been harsh and angry - with residents fearing the
worst... another doctors office, a dry cleaner or maybe another
bank. Given the failure of the Common Grounds Restaurant
to occupy the location now filled with a dentist office,
Starbucks backing out of their deal to come to Urbana, the
failure of Prime Outlets near 270 and now community favorite J&P
closing, people are wondering when the village center will ever
look full, finished and occupied.

Schools CLOSED Yet Again Tomorrow!
All Frederick County Public Schools are closed February 16.
All after-school and evening activities are canceled. The BOE
budget hearing has been rescheduled for Feb. 22, 7:30 pm,
location to be determined. Although school lots and
sidewalks are clear of snow, vehicular and pedestrian travel
remains unsafe in many parts of the county. More snow overnight
will create further problems for buses and students who walk to
school or bus stops. As of Feb 16, FCPS will have been
closed 10 days for snow. Five days are built into the calendar.
Students will make up 4 of those days on Mar 31, April 1, June
11 & June 14. On Feb 17 or 24 the BOE will discuss requesting a
state waiver of the 180-day school year to address other snow
days.
