Waffle House - First New Restaurant in
Town Center?
Word is circulating that a
Waffle House may be the restaurant slated to open in the
property next to 7-11. We at UrbanaMaryland.com have to
ask... is this the kind of restaurant to kick off a up scale
town center? I guess we'll have to wait and see...
but at first take, it seems disappointing.

Building & Permits Underway
Construction is in full swing at the former Urbana Shopping
Center which was demolished to make way for Fredericktown Bank.
Also of note, a permit sign has been spotted on the property
next to the new 7-11 for a "restaurant". No definitive
word yet on what that will be but we will pass along information
as it becomes available.

Urbana Fire Sirens Silenced
The Urbana Volunteer Fire Department will be moving towards a
new voice pager system as reported in the Gazette Newspaper.
This new system will be used in all but fire emergencies, which
should cut down drastically on the use of the old siren system.
Residents of the Villages of Urbana have been vehemently
complaining about the noise generated in the area at all hours
of day or night.

Urbana Hawks Football Streak Ends at 50
Urbana's 50-game winning streak ended last night in a 41-6 loss
to Baltimore power Gilman in a game that was as decisive as the
Hawks' string of high school football victories that spanned
four seasons. Gilman scored touchdowns on its first four
possessions at Morgan State's Hughes Stadium and the longest
winning streak for Maryland schools was about to end. The last
time No. 2 Urbana lost was in 1997. The game ended with the
clock running because of the 35-point mercy rule -- something
Urbana had done to 27 opponents during the streak.

Water Line Break Last An Embarrassing 7
Hours... County Website Woefully Outdated.
A tip of the
hat to the city of Frederick, Maryland which is currently under
Level 2 Drought Conditions. The Frederick News Post reports
in today's edition that there was a broken water main this
weekend on DeGrange Street, which a resident of the city phoned
in at 11am. The city finally shut off the flowing water at
5:45pm. Meanwhile, the city has has been trumpeting those on
city water (that includes Urbana) that we are 40 days from
running out of water and is looking into
trucking in water from the Potomac! Meanwhile, if you were
curious what kind of restrictions you should be following under
a Level 2 Drought, you probably won't want to turn to the
Frederick Maryland
homepage. Their
current information on the drought was last updated April
2002 while the
question/answer page was last updated June 21, 2002. (08.26.02)
